European Biodiversity Observation Network: Design of a Plane for an Integrated Biodiversity Observing System in Space and Time
Program: FP7
Project leader: RNDr. Halada Ľuboš, CSc.
Annotation: The EBONE project is designed to develop a fully integrated system based on key biodiversity indicators, implemented within an institutional framework operating at the European level. EBONE will make the links between databases, which have currently remained isolated in order to increase their overall effectiveness. A link will be made between the methods, data and observation sites available in different countries and regions. A link will also be made with various ongoing projects and available databases, as well as observation and monitoring systems. This will lead to a cost effective procedure for biodiversity monitoring by applying the most efficient indicators into a balanced sampling programme. One of the important steps is to carry out tests on the data from LTER sites in relation to analysis of nation-wide habitat monitoring programmes. EBONE is a partnership of sixteen universities and research institutes in Europe, Israel and South Africa.

These indicators were then assessed using sustainability thresholds/limits approach. This approach was based on definition of qualitative/quantitative threshold values for selected environmental indicators. Within the module 6.1., activities included elaboration of sustainability assessment plan for SIAT (Sustainability Impact Assessment Tool) testing region of High Tatras. The results were summed up into a data form containing definition of main sustainability problems, stakeholders and data resources. The M 6.2. activities included collection, standardisation and harmonisation of various social, economical and environmental statistical data for the High Tatras testing region. Data were collected according to M6 Data management framework and uploaded to common georeferenced database system.

The results from 3 studied localities will be compared the situation in Ľubietová, Špania Dolina and Staré Hory. The proposal for the optimal solutions of balanced sanitation (remediation) of investigated mining territory will be based on knowledge of technogenous sediments of the dump- fields, soil, water and plants of contamined territory and this will be presented as a result of the research. The recommended remediation will be realized with respect to the typical features of mining country so that it will consider the environment of the mining-historical and economic aspects.Key words:Heavy metals, mining industry, contamination, remediation

Program: VEGA
Project leader: Ing. Maňkovská Blanka, DrSc.
Annotation: The aim of the proposed project is to continue in detection of pollution by heavy metals, arsenic, sulphur and nitrogen in the territory of Slovakia using mosses and the follow up in the ICP Vegetation research (1990-2005). The principal objective is to carry out the compative analyses and to assess changes in the amount of pollution in Slovakia after 25 years. Partial aims include: assessment of the present distribution of the monitored elements in mosses in Slovakia; temporal and spatial changes for the years 1990-2010; correlation of element contents and factor analysis; effects of landscape factors (sea level altitude); the hot spot effect evaluation, causes and epidemiological gravity for Slovakia, long-term trends, comparison with neighbouring countries and preparation of element maps and those of temporal horizons. The project should bring new pieces of knowledge in all sciences represented in individual themes.

Zmeny krajiny Biosférickej rezervácie Tatry za posledných 200 rokov v kontexte vývoja spoločensko-ekonomických a prírodných podmienok
Landscape changes of the Biosphere Reserve Tatra in recent 200 years in relation to changing natural and socio-economical conditions
Program: SRDA
Project leader: Ing. Oszlányi Július, CSc.
Annotation: The project deals with problems on changes in landscape utilisation in the area of the Biosphere reserve Tatra within the last 200 years. On the purpose of change evaluations a set of historical maps and aerial photographs from 1769, 1822, 1900, 956, 1988, 2002 and 2006 will be used. Digital thematic maps of land cover/use changes and spatial-statistical information on types of changes will be derived. Main social-economical and environmental drives of these changes will be defined. Special respect will be put on the occurence of windstorm disasters and their effect on land utilisation within the study area. Changes in large-scale were evaluated in two model areas (Belianske Tatry Mts., Spálenisko pod Slavkovským štítom) in time horizon 1949-2003 by use of methodological tool of large-scale multi-temporal analyses based on obtaining information about landscape object changes by application of aerial orthophotographs. Dynamic of changes in landscape pattern will be analysed using landscape-ecological indices. Prognoses and models potential development based on different scenarios will be developed by means of geostatistical methods. A separate part of the research is an analysis of influence of natural phenomena on landscape structure changes in high-mountain conditions of Tatra Mts. Among them are those of short but strong morpho-dynamic disturbances, e.g.: snow avalanches and debris flows. In this project, we also interpret results of an observation considering the relationship between vegetation of land mantlerocks and intensity of morphodynamic processes from permanent plot in the territory of Belianske Tatry Mts. In 2009 the results have been published in scientific journals, education books and 2 monographs.

Sustainability Impact Assessment: Tools for Environmetal,Social and Economic Effects of Multifunctional Land Use in European Regions
Program: SRDA
Project leader: Ing. Oszlányi Július, CSc.
Annotation: Institute of landscape ecology SAS has participated on 3 modules, M 3.2., M 6.1. and M 6.2. Within the module M 3.2., ILE SAS participated on definition of criteria for selection of key sustainability indicators, their importance and relevance for assessing the sustainability on regional level and definition of links between key indicators and land-use functions.

Long-term ecological research in danube floodplain forests influenced by underground water level changes - part 2
Program: VEGA
Project leader: Ing. Oszlányi Július, CSc.
Annotation: The unique occassion, which occured in the study area after the changes in hydropedological conditions after the Gabčíkovo power plant has been put into operation enabled the establishment of long term ecological research at 6 chosen research sites. These sites are included into the world-wide network of ILTER sites. The priority activity is the measurement and evaluation of production-ecological paramerters in the possibly long-time series, evaluation of changes and trends and thus provide scientific arguments and scientific informations on influence of Man-caused changes on forest ecosystems. After the periond 1987-1996, when numerous measurements at the sites have been performed with the aim to evaluate the state-of-art before and after the hydropower plant has been put into operation. In 2003 – 2005, thanks to VEGA grant project 2/3078/24 the measurements have been renewed and another time series of data could be added to the data from previous years. To obtain the uninterrupted time series, the research and measurements must continue to enable to evaluate the changes in production-ecological situtation in the studied forest ecosystems and to establish and comment the tendencies and trends of their development after 15 years. In the world- network of long-term study plots the results from the Danube innundation sites will be of unique value and they will give scientifically based answer to the questions following from the construction of the waterworks in longer period.
